About Ganpati Mahotsav :
Ganeshotsav, also known as Ganpati Mahotsav, is celebrated annually during the month of Bhadrapad, beginning on Shuddha Ganesh Chaturthi. The tradition began in 1883 with a deeper purpose beyond religious celebration. It was first organized in Gwalior by Sardar Khasgiwale, with prominent citizens like Ganpatrao Ghovedekar, Bhau Vaidya, and Bhau Rangari installing the idol of Lord Ganesha. The practice of public celebration gained momentum when Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak recognized its social potential. On 26th September 1893, he wrote about it in the newspaper Kesari, praising the initiative and transforming Ganeshotsav into a public cultural event. Tilak’s vision was to foster unity among people of all castes, creeds, and classes, encouraging them to come together in celebration. By bringing the festival out of private homes and into the public domain, he laid the foundation for what would become one of India’s largest and most unifying festivals. Over time, Ganeshotsav has grown not only in scale but also in significance, becoming a powerful expression of devotion, cultural identity, and community spirit.
